Nico Gonzalez waits for Atletico Madrid, rejects Besiktas; Juve and Spalletti still hope

Story by Giovanni Albanese

Nico Gonzalez’s unusual summer is split between the training ground at Continassa and persistent transfer rumours. In truth, this merely prolongs the wait for a transfer window finale that should see him depart Juventus for a desired, but not yet certain, destination. The sticking point stems from the player’s personal view; even before returning to Turin (after a year on loan at Atletico Madrid), he made it clear he didn’t want to stay. Spalletti would have gladly assessed him for a potential stay and perhaps still holds out some hope, considering him an excellent player. This was confirmed by the coach’s words on the eve of the first league match in Frosinone: “Nico Gonzalez and Douglas Luiz, whom I didn’t know, impressed me with their level, substance, character, and pace.”

The winger’s firm resolve to leave is also linked to off-field reasons, as he reportedly didn’t settle in Turin or with the Juventus environment during his stay. Hence, his belief that he could be happier elsewhere; he found the best conditions in Madrid, with Atletico, and that’s where he wants to return. For Juve, however, it’s another headache to manage, not least because Atletico Madrid (who, crucially, know the player is keen) have yet to make a credible offer and will probably wait until the last minute to take him back on loan.

Juventus and Atletico Madrid attempted to open broad discussions at the start of the transfer window and could, therefore, resume talks soon. However, a more collaborative approach will be needed; it’s not out of the question that discussions could once again include Sorloth. The current situation demands caution, with the risk of a last-minute agreement falling through, hence the exploration of alternative solutions. Besiktas made an approach at Italiano’s explicit request, but Nico Gonzalez indicated he was not interested. Atalanta are also monitoring the Argentine’s situation and could make a move soon. Talks will resume at the end of the transfer window; Juve are waiting.
