England launches free bus travel for children to ease summer costs

  • Children aged five to 15 across England can travel for free on most local bus services throughout August.
  • The Department for Transport initiative aims to alleviate financial pressures on families during the school summer holidays.
  • Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander stated this measure helps families with the cost of living.
  • The Government also introduced the Great British Summer Savings scheme, cutting VAT on children’s meals, theatre and cinema tickets and family attractions.
  • A £2 cap on bus fares for all passengers will be reintroduced from the start of next year, replacing the current £3 cap.
